PLAYER ASSESSMENT

The Player Assessment offers a unique objective tool to evaluate the skills and abilities of individual players. It focuses on individual skills (dribbling/ball control, passing/serving, receiving/first touch, shooting/crossing/striking, speed/first to ball, fitness, positioning/spatial, etc.). Expanded assessments will take place post-season and consider other relevant elements.

One of the values of the assessment is the opportunity to create balanced teams. Coaches will use the player assessment at the beginning of the season to identify players' appropriate soccer skill levels, such as beginner, intermediate or advanced.

The ways of the past have created unbalanced teams. Some teams have struggled with beginning players, while others benefit from high-skill level players. The assessment remains a complementary tool and coaches' participation to create teams with various skill levels and allow players to grow, have fun, and challenge each other.

Guidelines to Build Balanced Teams

The mission of the SYSC is to develop and nurture the love of soccer in the Sherwood community. The assessment is a framework to guide the creation of BALANCED TEAMS for each division.

The goal is to create a fun and positive environment for all soccer players with different skill levels to participate, enjoy and active success. It is NOT about coaches drafting their preferred, high skilled players and their friends.

Guidelines

  • Coaches must have completed their background check in our system to be part of the team building process
  • Coaches will meet in person or by Zoom after the assessment
  • Coaches will receive the SYSC PLAYER ASSESSMENT tool as the primary framework to build their teams
  • Coaches may use their notes as as a supplement to help them in their players' selection
  • The SYSC PLAYER ASSESSMENT tool will list the players according to their subjective assessed skill level: Beginner - Intermediate - Advance
  • A volunteer will act as a facilitator and fill out the SYSC DRAFT SHEET as coaches select their players alternately

Snake Draft

  • Coaches may choose their starting order either via a coin flip or a random number from a hat to begin the process
  • Coaches will follow a Snake Draft format to select their players
  • Coaches will pick from a pool of players, [Recommended according to the skill levels], in rounds based on a set draft order until each roster is full.
  • Example – team 1, team 2, team 3, team 4, team 4, team 3, team 2, team 1, team 1, team 2, etc
  • Selection order is reversed after each round. So, the coach who picked last in Round 1 picks first in Round 2, followed by the coach who picked second-to last in Round 1, and so on.
  • Children of Head coaches will be round 3 pick,
  • Children of Assistant coaches will be round 4 pick
  • For teams that do not have assistant coaches, the head coaches will benefit of the round pick [Recommended according to the skill levels]
